How we worked it out

  1. Roof area: 2,442 ft² ÷ 100 = 24.4 squares (from the roofing calculator)
  2. Our range: 2,442 ft² × $4-$8 per ft² (architectural asphalt shingles) = $9,700-$19,600
  3. Tear-off, if priced separately: 2,442 ft² × $0.50-$1.50 per ft² = $1,200-$3,700
  4. Your quote: $14,500 against $9,700-$19,600: within range ($594 a square)
  5. Size: the quote says 25 squares; your roof is 24.4 (26.9 with 10% waste), so the sizes agree.
  6. Items: 6 of 21 on the quote, 15 not stated

Checked against your roof, not an average house

The Roof Quote Overcharge Check compares a roof quote with your own roof, not a typical house. It divides the price by your roof's measured area and sets it against installed price ranges from published cost surveys. It also lists which of 21 items the quote leaves out.

At least ten states cap the deposit

At least ten states limit how much a contractor can take as a deposit before work starts. California and Nevada set the lowest limit: $1,000 or 10% of the price, whichever is less. We found no deposit limit in the laws we read for 21 other states.

Find your state's row before you pay a deposit.

What this check is

General information, not legal or insurance advice, and not a substitute for the advice of an attorney. We quote each state's rule with its source and the date we checked it; we don't decide how it applies to your contract. We never rate or name a roofer, and we don't review insurance claims.

Method and sources

The price check divides the quote by your roof's own area and compares it with sourced installed ranges for your shingles, rounded outward to $100. State rules are quoted from each state's own law or regulator.

  • These are national price ranges. Prices vary by area.
